What Technology Promises
I get angry when people who are not party of the technology industry pretend to be informed about what technology wants or is. They make the true statement that the Age of Information has not made society any wiser. That is then followed by the false statement that technology promises wisdom. Technology and the Age of Information aspire to easily provide vast amounts of information to everyone. Technology does not promise or aspire to impart wisdom. If there is a question I can easily find the answer to using Google then that question, and its answer, does not make me wiser. Anyone who believes otherwise has come to that erroneous conclusion themselves. Technology gives me the power to clear my head of useless information that can be found online; instead I can focus on filling my mind with memories of the date my wife and I went on last week or experiences that expanded my testimony of Jesus Christ.

I must say that I agree, technology doesn't provide us with wisdom, however, I don't fully believe that technology clears our head completely of useless information. I feel that if we are smart with our technology then yes, it helps us to be more alert to what is happening and can help us focus on the important, but, and I feel like this is more the norm, it also crowds us with too much information at times. Technology is a portal to vasts amounts of information and if we can't learn to parse it, and not get lost in it then yes, I feel like your point is correct.
ReplyDeleteI feel like having the information so accessible has instead made me less apt to know basic things in the anticipation that if I ever need to know something I can find it online right then. I'm sure it's not just me doing that. How incapable we all would be, if the internet ceased to function properly. Truly we are potentially more of a crippled society than we were before the internet was standardized.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is an enabling agent, for better or for worse. With pornography you get mormon.org. The Jews asked for things they could not understand to their downfall. And be careful about placing knowledge online--out of sight, out of mind. We increasingly have issues of misinformation and missing common sense because people don't apply themselves to understanding.
ReplyDeleteI agree with David in that technology is a resource to help us find answers. Technology doesn't give us wisdom. Wisdom is more than just having information, it is able to use knowledge that we have in the proper situation. Technology can't do that for us.
